Shakiri Jo Lei Montoya, age 16 was from Carlsbad, New Mexico. She was diagnosed with Acute Myelogensus Leukemia (AML) in May 2009. Shakiri faced many challenges from her illness including 4 brain surgeries. She even made the decision to continue her junior year of studies during her hospitalization. When she was able she always enjoyed visiting other patients. One day while visiting with Shakiri, I asked her if she had any musical interest. She replyed that she had to play the trombone in band but that she really wanted to play the flute. The Grandblues (GCBS) organization made that request a reality for her. Shakiri was very surprised & happy to receive her flute.
